The exhaust inhaler is a cast concrete block with an air vent opening containing pollutant sensors. A fan sucks in air from the roadside and carbon monoxide and particulate measurements are made. This pollution data is transmitted from the device as a continuous data-stream. Because exhaust inhalers are typically positioned in a prominent position at the very edge of the road, they are also often used as address markers for motorway houses.
